Win One Game, Talk Extension

I’m going to need help from my Cowboy fans because this coach and owner relationship is confusing to me. Let’s start by talk about Jason Garret’s current contract as the Cowboys Head Coach. He signed a 5 year $30 million contract in January 2014  which would keep him under contract to the end of the 2019 season.

So what happened that led Cowboys owner, Jerry Jones, to sign this Princeton Graduate to this big contract? Well Jason Garret ended the 2014 football season with 12-4 record and hosted the Detroit Lions in the Wild Card Game. The Cowboys would win the game against Detroit and they would have to face the Green Bay Packers. True fans should remember this game because of one play that consist of Dez Bryant “not having possession” while reaching the ball towards the endzone. That play was the most controversial call of the season and Cowboy fans like to hold grudges. So the Cowboys were eliminated from the playoffs after losing the game against the Packers, but Jason Garrett won with receiving a nice contract. But would Jason Garrett enjoy his time over his contract?

Jason Garrett’s name has been talked about on the hot seat almost every year since he signed this contract. In 2015, the Cowboys ended their season with a 4-12 record, bounced back in 2016 to receive a first round bye but losing to Aaron Rodgers by a last second field goal. While in 2017, the Cowboys finished the season with a 9-7 record and missing out on the playoffs. So before the 2018 season Jason Garrett hasn’t won a playoff game, and was talked about getting removed as the head coach. This year the Cowboys started with a 3-5 record and people believed Jason Garrett would be removed as the head coach. The Cowboys pulled it together by making the playoffs and facing the Seattle Seahawks on January 5th and the Cowboys won 24-22.

So this is where it gets interesting. Jason Garrett throughout his contract was talked about getting fired, but once he won ONE playoff game Jerry Jones wants to talk about an extension just like the end of the 2014 season. So is this an owner that shows loyalty to his coach throughout his contract or is this owner that just needs ONE playoff win to be pleased? Does Jerry Jones keep Garrett around because Garrett will be Jerry’s puppet? Does Jerry see something in the Princeton man, and truly thinks that Garrett can win them a Super Bowl? Isn’t Jerry just hurting the Cowboy’s by not looking to see if there is another coach that could win them a Super Bowl?  Cowboy fans, or fans in general please make light about this situation because one year Garrett’s on the hot seat and the next year he’s getting a possible contract extension.
